“Skatepark Mom” talks San Dimas Skate Culture

A lifelong San Dimas resident, 23-year-old Savannah Spillman discovered San Dimas’s very own skatepark just three years ago when she started learning how to skateboard. In that short time, Savannah fostered a sense of community among the skating youth, became known as “Skatepark Mom,” and submitted a proposal to the City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission to improve lighting and safety at the skatepark. Listen to this episode to learn more about skate culture in San Dimas and hear some sage advice that may even inspire you to pick up a skateboard.

great podcast! I walk that park all the time with my dogs. I am always amazed at how nice the kids are when I stop and watch. Savannah Rocks! I love that she has become ‘Skatepark Mom’ and that she has an agenda to make the park more popular! If I see her next time, I will give her a shout out!!

Such a great podcast! I skate there every single day and clean up the trash at the park to make sure the park is clean as possible. The locals and I care for the park so much and would love lights. The skate community at the park truly cares for our skatepark because it is like our home and we treat it like it is our home. Thank you Savannah “Skatepark Mom” Spillman for everything you’ve done for us. Much love and love the podcast!

Great topic. I had never heard of this skatepark. We have started skateboarding due to COVID-19 time as well as a family. We have gone to La Verne and Claremont skateparks. Nice to see one in San Dimas. I hope to see folks continue to exercise even when everything opens up and there are choices.
I agree that Savannah has done a great job and I love to see more youth involved in the community. Also, I’ll say that I’m well past my 30’s and have enjoyed learning skateboarding for exercise. It’s not just for teenagers. Thanks for bringing this topic to light.

Shawn, I’m glad to see that you learned something new! I hope you and your family make the trek to our local San Dimas skatepark 🙂 it’s a little gem in our community. Also, I’m still planning to hop on a board one of these days and see if it’s something I can try to learn…
