Locally Owned: Palermo Cafe and Bakery

Listen to this episode, featuring an interview with Le Cordon Bleu-trained baker and co-owner of Palermo Cafe and Bakery Joseph Durkan. Joseph shares the story of why he and his fiancĂ© Nhancye D’Angelo came to revive the original D’Angelo family-owned bakery and how they came to find a new “home” for the bakery in Via Verde in 2019. Using old traditional recipes infused with modern techniques, the Palermo Cafe and Bakery reboot in San Dimas is a modern twist on traditions of the past.

I’m in the middle of the episode, great idea, love the thought, can’t wait for more. I try to shop small business as much as possible. I wanted to comment on the issues he was mentioning on getting the plans completed. Max’s restaurant in Azusa has been attempting to build in San Dimas for 3 years. When I found out they were opening down the street from my house I was beyond excited. Turns out I have to keep waiting. This is a family owned business, the land is theirs so they kept fighting the fight. We have SOOOO many empty buildings, once I heard this story it all made sense. Now that is just assumption but hearing a story like that makes you believe that people wouldn’t want to start a business in a City that is difficult to deal with.

Thanks for your comment, Adrian. I found my conversation with Joseph very enlightening, too! Also, I didn’t realize Max’s was having trouble opening–any idea what the issue has been? –Isabel

Great episode, a real highlight! Given the circumstances of the virus, our local businesses will see a decrease in patrons, but they don’t have to, I think this has also given us an opportunity to really invest and look for businesses in our own town to help in this pandemic.
I would recommend in your next episode highlighting Cafe Las Pupusas. Their blend of American, Mexican, and Salvadorean food is a nice treat that the residents of San Dimas are blessed to have in our community.
P.S. – I went to Palermo Cafe over the weekend to bring home breakfast for the family. They were quite impressed.

Thanks for your comments! I totally agree that we as a community need to support our small businesses during this challenging time! We have so many that are worth patronizing. As for Cafe Las Pupuas, I would love to interview someone from there–do you have a contact? –Isabel
